Discover Art in Melbourne

Melbourne is an important centre for art in Australia and the city has many museums and galleries where you’ll find Australian and international art to view. Some of the most well-known galleries include the following:

The National Gallery of Victoria
The National Gallery of Victoria (NGV) is located on St Kilda Road, just south of Flinders Street Station. The gallery is the home of major collections of international and Australian art. Established in 1861, the NGV is the oldest gallery in Australia and holds more than 70,000 works of art.

The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art
The Australian Centre for Contemporary Art (ACCA) located in Melbourne’s Southbank is a major gallery for contemporary art in Australia with an emphasis on commissioning rather than collecting. Established in the early 1980s, the ACCA brings to Melbourne work by contemporary artists from around the world.

Heide Museum of Modern Art
The Heide Museum of Modern Art located in Bulleen is an important space for contemporary art. Originally the home of Australian art collectors John and Sunday Reed, the museum continues their legacy of nurturing local artists.

Gertrude Contemporary
The Gertrude Contemporary is located in Fitzroy in a converted warehouse and is centre for the creation and exhibition of contemporary art in Melbourne. Opened in 1985, the Gertrude Contemporary runs regular exhibitions of Australian and international contemporary artists. It also has a number of residential and non-residential studios available to local and international artists.

RMIT Gallery

The RMIT Gallery is located on the edge of Melbourne’s CBD is an exhibition space for Australian and international artists. With a focus beyond just fine art, it is also a space for design, craft, fashion, new media, technology and popular culture.

Charleston’s was formed in 1997 by a group of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for art. We also had a common belief though art can be defined as “fine”, it doesn’t necessarily mean it should be elitist nor affordable only to investment bankers and multinational corporations.

By creating Australia’s first and, by far, most successful travelling art auction house, we regularly bring quality works of art to Australia’s capital cities and we are the only auction house that travels to major regional centres.
