Discover Art in Brisbane

Brisbane has a lot to offer art lovers and has many museums and galleries of art. Some of the city’s top galleries include:

Queensland Art Gallery
The Queensland Art Gallery is located in Brisbane’s South Bank, and as the state gallery for Queensland it has a large collection of Australian art from colonial times to the 1970s, along with international and Asian collections. Opened in 1895, the gallery has a long history of regular exhibitions of fine art as well as ceramics, textiles, and photography.

Gallery of Modern Art
The Gallery of Modern Art is located next to the Queensland Art Gallery and opened in 2006. As an extension of the state gallery, the Gallery of Modern Art focuses on Australian and international contemporary art.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Art Museum
The Queensland University of Technology (QUT) Art Museum is located near Brisbane’s Botanical Gardens and holds a large collection of art with an emphasis on contemporary works from Australian, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists. With a collection of over 3000 works, the QUT Art Museum holds regular exhibitions of contemporary art.

Institute of Modern Art
The Institute of Modern Art (IMA) was established in 1975 as an independent space for contemporary art. Located in Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, the IMA holds regular exhibitions, commissions new works and plays an important educational role targeting young people and adults.

Philip Bacon Galleries
Philip Bacon Galleries is one of Brisbane’s leading commercial galleries. Located in Arthur Street, Fortitude Valley, the gallery regularly exhibits Australian established and contemporary artists.

Redsea Gallery
Redsea Gallery is a commercial gallery which opened in 2008 in James Street, Fortitude Valley, and is the home of a range of contemporary artworks by established and emerging artists from Australia, New Zealand, South East Asia and Europe.

Charleston’s was formed in 1997 by a group of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for art. We also had a common belief though art can be defined as “fine”, it doesn’t necessarily mean it should be elitist nor affordable only to investment bankers and multinational corporations.

By creating Australia’s first and, by far, most successful travelling art auction house, we regularly bring quality works of art to Australia’s capital cities and we are the only auction house that travels to major regional centres.
