Discover Art in Adelaide

Adelaide has a lot to offer art lovers and has many museums and galleries of art. Some of the city’s top galleries include:

Art Gallery of South Australia
The Art Gallery of South Australia is located on Adelaide’s North Terrace and with over 35,000 works of art in its collection, it’s one of the largest state galleries in Australia. Established in 1881, the Art Gallery of South Australia has large permanent collections of Australian art, including Aboriginal art, colonial art, paintings from the Heidelberg School, and works by 20th century Australian masters like Drysdale, Boyd, Preston and Nolan. The gallery also has a an impressive collection of European paintings and sculptures.

Adelaide Central Gallery
Adelaide Central Gallery is located in Glenside within the Adelaide Central School of Art and features highly popular contemporary art, including exhibitions by local and national artists. Opened in 1987, the space also is the home for the School’s graduate work featuring a range of media from paintings, drawings, photography, printmaking, sculpture, installations and new media.

JamFactory is a not-for-profit with arts spaces located in Adelaide’s CBD and Seppeltsfield in South Australia’s Barossa. Established in 1973, JamFactory promotes and displays the work of outstanding local artists, craftspeople and designers.

Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia (CACSA)
The Contemporary Art Centre of South Australia (CACSA) is located in Adelaide’s Parkside and seeks to promote and support the creation of contemporary art. The centre provides exhibition space as well as running a public program of events, conferences and artist talks. The centre also has a robust publishing program supporting critical analysis and debate.

Charleston’s was formed in 1997 by a group of like-minded individuals who shared a passion for art. We also had a common belief though art can be defined as “fine”, it doesn’t necessarily mean it should be elitist nor affordable only to investment bankers and multinational corporations.

By creating Australia’s first and, by far, most successful travelling art auction house, we regularly bring quality works of art to Australia’s capital cities and we are the only auction house that travels to major regional centres.
