Born in 1969 in Pukatja, South Australia, Rhoda Tjitayi hails from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands. She was raised by her grandfather from Nyapari and grandmother from the Tjala Minyma Ngura, a sacred place for Honeyant Women. Currently residing in Adelaide, Rhoda’s works showcase the ancestral creation story “Piltati Tjukurpa” passed down from her grandmother. Her grandmother’s story of two sisters who, along with their husbands, traveled Piltati in search of food. The sisters would hunt and gather food, but one day decided to eat some of it before returning to their husbands. This caused their husbands to turn into water snakes and swallow the sisters in anger. The ancestral creation story of “Piltati Tjukurpa” is rich in cultural heritage and Rhoda’s works beautifully bring it to life. Rhoda was a Wynne Prize finalist in 2022.
