Henry Moore
European Artist
Henry Moore was an English sculptor, born in 1898 in Castleford, Yorkshire. He was known for organically shaped, abstract, bronze and stone figures, marking the significant 20th-century fixation on the humanist tradition in sculpture. Presenting a lifetime of monumental work, Henry Moore was best known for his interpretation of the reclining nudes. Immersed in the advanced English art scene, Moore took an interest in abstract time when the discipline was considered to be the most avant-garde, and at times extreme. After establishing himself as the master of the reclining nude, Moore himself chose to experiment with bold, more abstract shapes and blend these gestures with his references to the human figure. Travelling through time and influences, Henry Moore’s sculpture takes fresh and ornate forms, each citing his observation of the anatomy of humankind in dynamic ways.
