Edgar Degas

European Artist

Born in 1834, Paris, France, Edgar Degas was a French Impressionist painter, sculptor, and printmaker. Throughout his life, he was widely admired for his depictions of Parisian life. With the human figure serving as his principal subject, he explored works ranging from portraits, singers, milliners, and laundresses. Other noteworthy paintings feature ballet dancers and women engaging in routine grooming and everyday activities. Degas was known as the sole Impressionist to bridge the nexus between classical academic art and the more radical movements of the early 20th century. His craft met with his enthusiasm for innovation, setting the pace for both his contemporaries and the younger generation. Acknowledged as a leader of multimedia creation, he experimented with oils, pastels, etching, monotype, wax modelling, and photography. In his later years, his work underwent simplification, producing vivid colour, expressive forms, and lengthy sequences of compositions. Explore rare Edgar Degas artwork online now.
